The Tilly Project: Butter

Debbie Wibowo October 22, 2026

Butter found his family, M and M, about eight years ago. A few years later, Waffle, Butter’s granddaughter, joined the family.

Butter’s parents described him as a calm soul who was always ready to smile. At 14, Butter developed degenerative myelopathy, which affected his hind legs. Several weeks ago, he was diagnosed with another health issue, and his family had to make the difficult decision to say goodbye.

I met Butter one day before that goodbye. He used a wheelchair to support his hind legs and was settled into a stroller during our session. His coat was thick and gorgeous. Although he was initially cautious around me, he gradually warmed up and became more comfortable. I can see what a wonderful part he has been of this family, as he often looked up and kissed his parents when they put him on their lap.

Meanwhile, Waffle seemed to understand that her assignment was to lift the mood. She kept showing me her radiant smile—something her parents said she rarely does. “Perhaps they switched personalities today,” her mom said.

I'm grateful M and M invited me to photograph their family during such a difficult time. I hope that these photographs will bring back fond memories of Butter and the years they shared.
